Introduction to Pattern Drafting and Garment Making

Week 9

This week, we continued working on the basic shirt as I encountered some errors that needed fixing. While it was a bit frustrating to revisit parts of the process, it was also a valuable learning experience. The main issues were uneven seams and a misaligned collar, which threw off the overall look of the shirt. With Ms. Melina’s guidance, I carefully unpicked the problem areas and redid them. Fixing the collar was the most challenging, as it required extra precision to ensure it stay neatly on the neckline. I also had to adjust the sleeve seams slightly to improve the fit.

Although it was time consuming, going through the process again helped me understand the importance of patience and attention to detail in garment construction. By the end of the week, I was relieved to have corrected the errors, and the shirt looked much better.

Week 10

This week, we began drafting the pattern for Look 1, our first full design project. With Ms. Melina’s guidance, I worked on translating my design into a workable pattern. It was exciting to see my idea start taking shape, but it was also challenging to ensure that every detail was accurate.

Ms. Melina helped me draft the pattern, walking me through the process step by step. We started by using my bodice block as a base, making adjustments to fit the unique features of my design. This included modifying the neckline, adding design lines, and adjusting the length and fit. Her expertise was invaluable, especially when I got stuck on some of the technical aspects, like ensuring the pieces aligned correctly. Although the process was detailed and required a lot of focus, it felt rewarding to see the pattern come together.
