Task 1
Week 1: Introduction to the Module
The first week our lecture is about the module
outline, expectations, responsibilities, and assessment criteria. We also
received a briefing on our projects, including the theme of "Everyday
Design." This session set the stage
for the work ahead, emphasizing the importance of observation and analysis in
design.
Week 2: Research and Topic Selection
We explored different research methods and began
brainstorming potential topics. At this stage, we were still unsure of our
final topic but considered in different aspects of everyday design.
Week 3: Topic Confirmation and
Proposal Submission
After further discussions and research, we confirmed
our topic, Pillows in Chinese Culture and consulted our lecturer,
received feedback, and made improvements to our proposal before submitting it.
The process helped us refine our research approach and strengthen our
understanding of the topic, ensuring our work is aligned with the project
objectives.
Task 2
Week 4: Initial Data Collection
With our proposal submitted, we began moving into
the data collection phase. We conducted preliminary research on traditional
Chinese pillows, their materials, and cultural significance. At this stage, we
gathered online resources, reviewed museum archives, and explored potential
survey questions for consumer insights. Although data collection was in its
early stages, we started compiling useful references to guide our design.
Week 5: Data Collection and
Compilation
We further research on our data collection using
multiple methods:
Online Research: We explored academic articles, museum archives, and historical references on Chinese pillows.
Observation: We visited MyTOWN Mall to study pillow materials and ergonomic designs in stores like Spotlight, SSF Home, and IKEA.
After gathering this data, we began organizing and analyzing the findings. Key takeaways included: A preference for pillows combining ergonomic support with herbal benefits. A strong market interest in modern designs with subtle cultural elements. Most consumers preferred affordable options under RM100. These insights guided us and begin developing our prototype.
Task 3
Week 6: Development
With the data in mind and our prototype. The design
process involved:
Finalizing the pillow structure: A detachable memory
foam and herbal pillow core connected via a zipper.
Selecting materials: We chose silk for its luxurious
feel and hair protection properties.
Herbal selections: We incorporated calming herbs
like chrysanthemum, sour jujube seed, and biota seed.
Week 7: Final Project
We recorded our zoom presentation covering our
research, rationale, design evolution. Showcasing the final herbal pillow
prototype and its components. Links to our e-portfolio and TikTok documentation
of digital record of our process.
Reflection:
Throughout this project, I played a key role in video
editing, slide organization, slide editing, recording, and researching,
which allowed me to develop both creative and analytical skills.
One of the biggest challenges I faced was time
management, especially balancing multiple tasks. Researching required me to
explore the history and cultural significance of traditional Chinese pillows
while ensuring relevance to modern design. At the same time, organizing and
editing the slides was crucial in making the presentation clear, structured,
and visually engaging. Refining the slides required careful attention to
detail, ensuring consistency in design, tone, and flow.
Recording the presentation was another important
responsibility, I needed to record well to ensure
clarity. Video editing was also a challenging task, as I need to ensure smooth
transitions, audio, and an overall video. These tasks pushed me to improve my
technical skills and work efficiently under deadlines.
Overall, this experience reinforced my ability to
manage multiple responsibilities while maintaining quality. It also highlighted
the importance of team coordination, self-discipline, and problem-solving
in a collaborative design process. Through this project, I learned that effective
presentation and storytelling are just as important as research and design
in making an idea impactful.
