Task 1

Week 1

This week, Mr. JR gave us a detailed briefing on Task 1. The task focuses on the 'Hatching' technique using Artline pens. The theme is Black & White Avant Garde, and we’re required to illustrate both womenswear and menswear on A3 illustration boards. Mr. JR also guided us on body proportions and helped me choose a suitable black-and-white photography reference for my illustration. The hatching technique seemed simple at first but required a lot of control and consistency.

Week 2

I began my hatching illustration this week. There were several trial and error attempts, and unfortunately, I accidentally did it wrong at first. My strokes weren’t consistent, and the arm looked very off. Thankfully, after Mr. JR demonstrated the technique again, I understood where I went wrong. With his guidance, I managed to save the piece. Practicing angled hatch strokes afterward really helped me improve the rhythm and control in my linework, and my progress was finally approved.

Week 3

This week unfortunately, I made a mistake in my illustration the hatching technique ended up making the figure look ghost like or even zombie like, which was very weird and not what I intended. I felt a bit discouraged seeing how off it looked, but I decided to redo the illustration properly. After taking a step back and reworking it with better control and understanding of the strokes, the second attempt turned out much better. It felt good to see the improvement.

Task 2

Week 4

I successfully completed the hatching task this week and moved on to Task 2, which focuses on the scrubbing technique using color pencils. The assigned theme is Spring & Summer, so I began looking for vibrant, colorful fashion photography that fits the mood and palette of the season. A demo video by Mr. JR was very helpful in guiding me through the proper way to apply the scrubbing technique effectively.

Unfortunately, I messed up this one as well during my first attempt the colors didn’t blend as smoothly as I expected, and the overall look felt patchy and uneven. But I treated it as part of the learning process and planned to redo it with more care and better control next week.

Week 5

This week, I was deeply occupied with my Fashion Project 1 designing and constructing the kebaya. Most of my time was spent developing the kelepet pattern and starting the draping process. Because of that, I couldn’t focus much on my fashion illustration assignments. I planned to catch up the following week once I could better manage my workload.

Week 6

Still caught in the whirlwind of Fashion Project 1, I was focused on making the test fit for my kebaya this week. Most of my time was spent refining the fit, adjusting everything before moving forward with the final garment. Due to the constant back and forth adjustments during the process, I couldn’t complete my illustration tasks this week either. However, I took note of what I needed to illustrate.

Week 7

I resumed work on Task 2 this week, focusing on the scrubbing technique with colored pencils. I hadn’t completed it yet, but made some progress. Still, the majority of my time was spent preparing for the Fashion Project 1 prototype.

Task 3

Week 8

I began searching for references for Task 3, which is the Overlapping marker technique with the theme Sport Illustrated. However, with the kebaya fabric changes and mid-process stress, it was hard to focus completely on illustration. Fashion Project 1 took most of my energy this week.

Week 9

This week was fully packed with preparing the base of my kebaya for the fashion show. I spent a lot of time carefully cutting and recutting the garment pieces because of unexpected fabric issues, which slowed down my overall progress. It was both physically and mentally exhausting, as I had to make sure every detail matched the vision I had for my final design. Due to this hectic schedule and the constant adjustments, I wasn’t able to focus on completing my Fashion Illustration assignment yet. I felt a bit anxious about falling behind, but I reminded myself that once the garment work settled, I would dedicate time to finishing the illustrations properly.

Week 10

I finally had a breakthrough in Task 3. I tried the overlapping technique using markers, and although it was challenging, Mr. JR approved my trial and error. Thankfully, I didn’t mess up this one and got it approved on the first try. This week gave me a bit of confidence back, especially after struggling with the previous two tasks.

Week 11

This week was the actual Fashion Show Day for Fashion Project 1, which completely took over my schedule and energy. From dressing my model to handling last minute touch ups and getting through the runway presentation, it was a whirlwind. I was fully focused on making sure everything went right on stage.

Because of that, I couldn’t really touch my Fashion Illustration work until after the show. Once everything settled down the next day, I finally had the mental space to continue. I used that time to finish up Task 2, focusing on the color pencil scrubbing technique. It felt good to get back into it and slowly wrap things up after such an intense and emotional week.

Final Project

Week 12

This week I rushed to complete other assignments of fashion illustration. It was a lot to juggle, but I just kept pushing through and finish everything

I also started preparing my final kebaya illustration using AI as a base for my composition, and began working on my watercolor mixed media version for the last fashion illustration assignment. This week, I officially started painting mixing techniques and testing what works best to bring out the details of my design.

Week 13

This week, I finished my watercolor mixed media kebaya illustration. While painting, I accidentally made the tone darker than I intended, which stressed me out for a moment. Luckily, Mr. JR said it’s okay and suggested that I touch it up with a bit of darker color to balance everything out. That gave me some relief, and I adjusted it as best I could.

Now that the artwork is done, everything’s finally coming together. Just a few more steps to the end!

Week 14

This week was the final presentation for all modules, marking the end of a very intense semester. I’m happy to say I successfully finished my final Fashion Illustration assignment. I combined AI generated reference images and watercolor mixed media to illustrate my kebaya design, aligning with the theme and texture of my fashion project. The process allowed me to experiment creatively while also applying the techniques I’ve learned throughout the semester.

Despite the chaos and overlapping deadlines from other modules especially with garment construction and the fashion show it felt incredibly rewarding to finally complete everything. The pressure was overwhelming at moments, but finishing the illustration brought a real sense of closure and accomplishment.

Reflection

Throughout this semester, Fashion Illustration taught me how to express design ideas through various techniques like hatching, color pencil scrubbing, and marker overlapping. In the beginning, I struggled especially with hatching technique but after receiving feedback, I reworked my piece and saw noticeable improvement in my line work and shading.

Due to the heavy workload from Fashion Project 1, many of my illustration tasks were delayed. I was often caught up with draping, fabric manipulation, and preparing for the fashion show. However, I made sure to complete all tasks later, using my kebaya design as the main reference.

In the final weeks, I used AI references and watercolor to present my finished illustration. Even though it was stressful juggling everything, completing the final assignment gave me a strong sense of closure.

I’m thankful to Mr. JR for his guidance and honest feedback. This class helped me grow not only in technical skills, but also in my ability to effectively present and communicate my design concepts visually.
